It is horrifying that things happened to people in Kunming.
As I watched news about Kunming Knife Attack, I fell terrible and condemn the group or person planned this attack.
I grief for the deaths and wounded, non of them deserve being attack out of no reason.
Chinese government has defined this attack as a terrorist attack. From what I see, it is important to find out who exactly and why the choose this way to raise attention from our society.
I don’t want to comment on which group is actually responsible for this attack, the police and intelligence will track them down. However, I am here to talk about duties of media when things like this happened.
I received a newsletter from a blogging website I subscribed to. The headline for this newsletter, different from the artistic or pretentious title they used to put, they said today ‘what we should do now is remain calm, not spreading rumours and suspicions, not causing more media chaos for the public.’
I totally agree and praise this nobel self-duty-awearness as a media themselves.
Information technology has been so advanced that everyone can become a self-media with the help of Internet and social media. A newspaper journalist friend of mine said to me as we met for a coffee, ‘nowadays, you don’t need a reporter at a car accident scene, everyone around that place who have smartphones will do the job for you.’
It is a biter statement but true.
I would imagine after Kunming’s attack, there will be huge rage floating online by all the netizens in China. Yet I am glad to see more statements on Weibo were about not bringing this rage towards one single attack onto rage towards a race or ethnicity group. I am glad to see the so called ‘Internet Salvages’ are less Chinese network. People became more reasonable in terms of giving judgment on this attack.
Media conscious is something always being criticised in China, while it is also a worldwide problem, what and how should media behave that could be consider fair?
And now, in this self-media era, it is comforting to see a lot of justice individuals showing their concern yet remaining calm and call on others to remain a clear mind, not to drown in anger and hatred that are unnecessary. That is something we are losing in the society but should retrieve it bit by bit. I am so glad it is happening.
And now, let’s pray for people who lost their lives or injured in Kunming 3.01.
