It is a long title, I know.
This idea pops up in my mind all of a sudden.
I was reading about online activism in China by Yang Guobin and the American ‘social graph’ by Morozov at the same time.
Just to see what Chinese people and American people have lost into such dilemmas, on one hand, Chinese are struggling on the freedom to access information online, on the other hand, Americans are struggling on if those ‘friends’ on Facebook are not looking, will they still do good deeds or not.
So I am thinking, as the new generation are intensively engaged with the Internet, there are certain boundaries in Chinese cyberspace should be broken. How ironic, don’t you think? Internet was invented and serving the function of reaching information without the limits of time and space, while in nowadays, the limit of time and space is still there which limiting the information flow.
Sometimes when I read the articles talking against Chinese government, they could be quite aggressive from what I see. I just wonder, despite the hatred towards the party, do those people see the development of the country? But that’s not my point, and I don’t mean to have any point on the Chinese political condition.
My point is, I suspect there is no communication between the people from inside and outside China. And I would like to suggest maybe the government should start to think about open up a bit more in the virtual world. If you let people communicate, it is always the better way to make peace.
For one thing, the 80’s generation is now becoming the ‘new blood’ of developing the society, even after years of the government’s ‘fooling the people’ policy in order to suppress social unrest, the new generation started to realise the problem in the society. Polarisation, inequality, corruption…young people can see what is going on, and they are not happy about the situation, and they are expressing on the Internet how much they are disappointed. There is a potential force of rebellion among Chinese youth which is very dangerous. Just to imagine something like 1989 happened again, and most of them will be only child of the family, if anything happen to those well educated precious future elites, I can imagine how bad the upper society will feel about it.
Another thing is, with so much passive social emotions, the youngsters should know more about people’s lives in other parts of the world. Then they will see, there are problems everywhere in this world, not just their own place, America is not heaven, it’s just another place with issues on this or that.
And the government should give more trust to the people online. Actually a lot of peaceful Chinese young people I know are not speaking as much online because they don’t find it useful to say anything, it is always some extremes who are talking a lot. But if the government will let the people have a bit more freedom on the Internet, there are always people who want to make peace for the society, and to tell the truth, that’s what most people are thinking about.
Sometimes I find the social unrest in China, is not really about the problems in the society, most of the time, they are against Internet restriction itself, and the way how the government is trying to cover up the problems even though everybody knows about it.
But let say if we give enough information to people for the sake of the right to know, then I believe they can judge themselves. The Chinese government should believe in the people after all they’ve done, there must be some gratitude from the society. It’s very much like teaching a kid, if you tell him not to do this, he will have more resistant emotion than necessary and it will take you a long time to make him behave, but if you let him try, he will learn what to do and what not to do in a very short time. In fact, he will be so considerate when doing things instead of kicking and yelling and crying.
It is understandable that the government is trying so hard to protect his only child – the multi-ethnicity unified country (tell me, how many countries can do that? Maintaining a big territory with thousands of years’ history where there are people living together with different believes) it’s hard, ask the Americans. He is being very careful, protecting it (or rather say, keeping the child at home and not letting him to go anywhere else), but the child will not grow up with the parent is not letting go his hands.
Speaking of parenting,it’s such a headache.
