Speaking of encoding and decoding the messages that media delivers, it comes to my mind that Music, as a form of media content, carried a function of maximising the quantity of message it is delivering.
It’s a long sentence, I know.
Basically, how people communicate via music, is that the notes carrying a certain type of emotion which will cause the same feeling among certain individuals who listen to it. But it is very vague, which means music never carries a precise meaning. Just like reading a fiction that every reader can have their own imagination towards the story.
Music is never delivering an exact meaning from the message. There’s a range of frequencies that the piece of work can create resonances among people who share similar opinions. It’s not just one certain opinion that the composing targeted, and the actual audiences that are willing to accept the content would be from a much wider range of opinions than the piece of music itself.
Same thing doesn’t happen to video contents as music/audio contents does most of the time. It seems like audio-visual content with a richer form when delivering a message is often too specific that containing less quantity of the meaning in it.
This is an interesting contrast of how you can use less expression but delivering more meaning. If someone keep explaining about a problem, it will make the problem worse.
In this case, music is an unspoken language that, as my friend said, different people interpret it in different ways. In this way, music is enlightening people in the simplest way, the audiences heard what they want to hear.
That’s how people communicate via music, maybe A person thought that he encoded the message in this way, yet B person listens to it and decoded in another way. But they all feel the kind of emotion they want to feel, being subjective to the piece. Both sides got what they want, everyone is happy. Isn’t this the very reason why communication exist? To make people happy? Problem solved!
And also I would say that music is a way of intangible communications. Message with precise meanings could be tangible communications because the receiver knows exactly what he/she is receiving. On the other hand, the music a person listens or likes is reflecting the personality in the unspoken and indirect way but is often more efficient than we could expect. This relates to how our subconscious is affecting our taste/habitués and behaviour, and how these things reflecting on our subconscious, which is another story. Anyway, a person’s taste on music shows the person’s view about the world in a way that the person is not telling his opinion by himself, but you can get to know his opinion through such intangible medium.
So, I would recommend you to be careful about what you listen and what you click ‘like’ or ‘share’ on Spotify, because you never know what people might think about you could affect you one way or another. It’s not like that all the time obviously, but, you know what I mean. What you hear might affect you as well.
All in all, it is amazing how music can make people happy within 5 seconds, from what I see, it is affecting me very well.
