Sometimes I am very confused by the way the media portrays China, no matter east or west or else where.
I am not very sure about Western media, but back in China, nothing much was told.
Chinese media tend to show less negative information to its citizens. Most of the time, the economy is developing very well, industries expanding; we have good harvest again this year and everyone seem so happy. On the other hand, people outside China are having a lot of conflicts, protests or even war.
We know that’s not all around the world but we have a joke in China, that is, the News Report of CCTV (Central China Television) is like a cure for stressed Chinese people looking at good aspects of China and watching other people suffering outside China.
Meanwhile, the Western media gave a red background with China’s next Chairman Xi Jinping on the cover of a magazine. China never does anything that’s obvious enough to let outsiders figure out what we are thinking. So people are afraid of us.
Just like the ‘Ahmed the Dead Terrorist’, maybe I can joke to people by saying, ‘I am Chinese, are you afraid?’
The thing is, it is part of the culture that Chinese tend not to reveal their thoughts easily. China is meant to be mysterious because that’s who we are. One of the most important qualities about Chinese is that we always think about the good sides and smile, even though people hate each other privately. It’s an attitude that not to cause superficial conflicts.
But deep down…we complain, we complain, we strongly complain! And nothing happens, don’t worry.
