The link attached in this post is the first episode of the first season in this show. This show has been recently introduced to Chinese audiences in the Mainland. According to the searching results in Sina Weibo (Twitter like social media in China), the majority of Chinese audiences welcomed such a way of presenting the country.
Despite all the awkward elements that the producers intended to record about China, most of the Chinese audiences basically just laughed about it. But what are they laughing about?
From the comments I read, there are people complaining about the TV show is not showing the whole of China. But most of the audiences are saying it is very funny to see how an English guy feeling unease in a different cultural environment and had a hard time.
So, a few things can be concluded from this: One, people are watching it as a comedy and maybe the Chinese audiences are adopting a British way of humor. Two, the Chinese audiences don’t mind the producers doing practical jokes about Chinese culture. Three, it is partly showing a reality, but it is being interpreted into a different meaning.
But will the Chinese audiences actually take the offence? Or will the other audiences will have negative thinking about China because of this? This is worth studying-the Audiences’ Judgement.
